Messages navigator :: Menu commands

File menu commands:

New Mailbox

This command creates a new file for storing messages.

Delete Mailbox

Deletes a mail file from the list of search sources and from the disk. If the mailbox is not empty, you will be asked to confirm deletion of the file.

Load External Mailbox...

Loads an external mailbox file into the messages Navigator. Use the standard "Open File" dialogue box to find the mailbox file on disk, and load it into the navigator.

ReLoad External Mailbox

This command brings up a list of most recently loaded external mailbox files, for reloading into the messages Navigator.

Load Message Archive

Opens message archives for review.

An archive file has the same message format and file name as the usual storage mailbox but it has the extension mba /Mail Box Archive/ instead of the storage mailbox extension mbx.

Load Newsgroup

This command loads articles or their headers from the selected newsgroup for review, provided that the articles or headers were downloaded from the news-server.

The newsgroup is loaded for review as a virtual external mailbox file in which it is not possible to edit or delete messages. If you need to work with the messages, copy them into a separate mailbox, or use the subscription manager to store them in a separate mailbox on downloading from the news-server.

Message menu commands:

Create New...

This command loads the outgoing message editor for creating and sending new messages.

Resend / Forward...

Loads the text of an already sent message into the outgoing message editor.

Reply | To Author

Loads the template for replying to the author of the current message into the outgoing message editor. The fields "To" and "Subject" are automatically filled in, and the source text is inserted into the body of the letter for reference.

Reply | To Newsgroup

Loads the template for replying to the current newsgroup message into the outgoing message editor. The fields "Newsgroups" and, "Subject" are automatically filled in, and the source text is inserted into the body of the letter for reference.

Reply | All

To reply to the author and other correspondents from the "To" or "Cc" list, choose this command. The list of recipients will appear in the "Cc" field of the outgoing message editor.

View and Edit

Loads the message into a separate window in the incoming messages editor for review or change of contents.

Copy...

Copies one message, or a marked group of messages, into a storage mailbox or external file.

If you indicate only the filename in the opened dialog box, the messages will be copied into a standard mailbox, created in the same directory as the MailNavigator program. To choose an alternate file for saving messages, you must enter its complete path, or click on the "diskette" icon to choose a file.

If the indicated mail file already exists on the disk, the marked messages will be added to the end of this file. If the "create a copy" box is not checked, the marked messages will be transferred to the indicated file.

Move...

Analogous to the Message | Copy command, except that the "Create a Copy" box is not checked. This command moves a group of selected messages from one mailbox to another.

Move to Archive

If you receive a lot of messages on a daily basis, the primary incoming messages mailbox can get quite large. Suddenly you realize that new messages are hard to find. The only solution is to delete the messages you have already read, or move them somewhere else.

Messages can be moved either to another mailbox (Message | Move), or to an archive.

An archive mailbox has the same message format and filename as a storage mailbox, but has the extension mba /Mail Box Archive/ instead of the extension mbx. To avoid getting an "Out of memory" message, it is best to store all your messages in archives rather than in the primary mailbox.

The archived message file can always be loaded into the navigator for review (menu item: File | Load message archive), but it is not necessary to load the whole file to find particular information. For this, use the special Information Retrieval page.

If you don’t plan to read all the huge number of messages arriving daily from an active newsgroup or mailing list, you should immediately set up an archive file with the extension mba in the Subscription Manager.

Delete (to Trash)

Deleting the current message or group of marked messages actually sends them to the Trash. The name of the file, Trash.mbx, is a given.

Print...

Sends a message or group of marked messages to the printer.

Save As...

Saves current or marked messages in the text file (extension - .txt). If you select the file type "RFC-822 text file" (extension - .mes)., the messages will contain an extended set of header fields, and will be divided from each other by a special separator ( CR LF . CR LF ) in accordance with RFC-822 format.

Export to Separate Message Files...

Saves the current or marked messages in .msg files. Each such file contains one message in RFC-822 text format. This enables you to import saved messages from other mail programs supporting import from .msg files, and also to open message files of the program designated by the operating system as the default handler of .msg files.

You can give other extensions to saved files. For example, if you choose the file extension .eml and save the messages, the eml files can be used as templates for creating form letters. Opening a file in the outgoing messages editor of a mailing program is a standard operation for .eml files.

Date...

This command calls to the screen a window for installing a filter on the date of a message:

When the filter is in effect, only messages whose "Date" field matches the filter will remain browsable in the Messages Navigator.

Identical Messages

Quite often it happens that a mail archive contain several copies of the same message. Or different newsgroups loaded simultaneously for review may each contain a copy of a message that was dispatched to all these groups. Also, it happens that members of a network community regularly dispatch the same announcement to a commercial newsgroup.

In all these cases, the installation of the given filter saves you having to see and read multiple copies of the same message.

The application of the filter is especially useful when you have done a search of messages in the files several times in succession. The identical messages filter allows you to remove any duplicate messages from the joint report.

Delete Identical Messages

This command works similarly to the Filter Identical Messages command, only in this case messages which are repeats are not filtered, but deleted (in the Trash).

Clear All Filters

This command clears all previously installed filters.
